Energy Efficiency

Washoe County School District (WCSD) designs schools to utilize local resources, protect water quality, and save money long-term through energy efficiency. WCSD designs towards the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) checklist for schools. The designs are also influenced by the Truckee Meadows Low Impact Development (LID) Handbook. Sustainability efforts include: Sustainable Sites • East/West Orientation maximizes natural solar efficiency • Two-story design saves energy and uses less land • Sites designed to passively address storm water onsite, lowering run-off and water pollution • Cool Roof lowers energy costs • Use of locally-produced building materials • Use of reclaimed water for 100% of irrigation Energy and Atmosphere • Buildings meet 2018 International Energy Conservation Code • Geo-exchange heat pump systems • No use of Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Refrigerants • No Chiller – lowers risk of refrigerant issues Indoor Environmental Quality • Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) paints • Modular tile and strip carpet – No glue • Daylighting systems to increase natural light • Photo sensors on the artificial lighting that automatically reduce its usage • Operable windows to allow for “passive” heating and cooling • Individual Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) & lighting controls • Structural systems, piping, ducting and other systems left uncovered to save building costs and help with the teaching tool model Renovating Older Schools • Major efforts underway to update lighting, HVAC controls and usage, and conserve water, which will pay for itself in utility bills • Older schools are renovated to make classrooms comparable to newer schools, include energy saving measures such as double-pane windows, and more efficient heating and cooling systems
